Filming in the Oberzeiring show mine

Action!

On Saturday, 21 January 2023, the Oberzeiring show mine was the location for the film "Muleteers and Mining in the Middle Ages" - we were allowed to accompany the filming by the company Netta Mea.

The Murtal was an important trading hub in the Middle Ages. Mining in particular was the focus of our beautiful region. Today's the show mine in Oberzeiring was one of the largest silver mines in Styria and was operated by the Habsburgs in the Middle Ages. The mine experienced its heyday at the end of the 13th century.

Medieval mining was hard and arduous. The crawl space was never higher than 1.20 metres. The miners had to work kneeling and lying down. Children and dogs gave a helping hand. Besides silver, iron ore and other minerals such as zeiringite were also found in Oberzeirung.

In 1958, the then tourist association allowed visitors access to a small part of the silver mine. The show gallery was continuously expanded and modernised in the following years. In 2018, the show mine was awarded the Austrian Museum Quality Seal.

History can be felt here - also for the actors and extras of the film "Hammers and Mining in the middle age". The production company Netta Mea used the unique atmosphere of the mine for filming the movie. The life of the miners and their families was recreated in detail. Fog machines were used to recreate the mystical atmosphere of the past. But it is not only the mine that provides the perfect backdrop for the film about the Middle Ages. In the first half of the year, the Murtal will serve as a filming location again and again. Be curious!
