BergZeitReise Tagestourentipp - Falkenstein- und Lachalm

A beautiful, depending on your mood very short and therefore extremely family-friendly - or extended and therefore quite conditionally demanding alpine circuit in the Mürzer Oberland Nature Park. The short variant is perfect for getting a taste of the cultural landscape of the High Styrian alpine pastures along the BergZeitReise.
They characterize the image of the High Styrian cultural landscape - the alpine pastures between Rax, Hochschwab and the Fischbacher Alps. A world of its own, idyllic, but often rough and uncomfortable due to the weather. Hardly anyone sees the hard work of the alpine dairymaids, but we are happy about the milk, sandwiches and cheese after a good hike. Today, one such hike takes us to the Mürzer Oberland Nature Park, to the Falkenstein and Lach alpine pastures, two of the many alpine pastures here in northeastern Styria.

The cultural landscape of the alpine pastures on the doorstep of the Obsteirian cities

What do Bruck an der Mur, Kapfenberg, Kindberg or even Mürzzuschlag, the urban centers of Upper Styria, have to do with the alpine pastures of the region? Well, these unique cultural landscapes with their diversity of flora and fauna have always been recreation areas and places of longing for nature-loving people in the cities. And it is to such a place of longing that this hike takes us to the Falkenstein and Lachalm.

Monday to Friday hard work, the weekend on the Alm

Some time ago there was a documentary on the culture channel of the ORF, in which an already somewhat older gentleman remembered his childhood and youth in Kapfenberg. According to him, they were very nice memories, memories of hard working days, but also of unforgettable mountain tours and hikes over our high Styrian alpine pastures.

More information

We begin today's enjoyable, easy and, depending on your mood, rather short to quite long hike a few hundred meters west of the small village of Krampen near Neuberg an der Mürz. Here (directly on the Mürztalradweg R5, yellow sign) a new marked access to the Falkensteinalm was created by the Alpine Club in cooperation with the Federal Forests.

We hike over this, at first quite steeply and then increasingly flatter to the Falkensteinalm, which is soon visible. By the way, this is also easily accessible by mountain bike from Lanau / Mürzsteg.

After a short break, continue on a forest path until you see a stable building on the right below the path - now left uphill and in a northerly direction and always following the path (path, forest path) until you reach the prominent cross above the Lachalm (wonderful vantage point). From here in a few minutes to the alpine huts.

Return either on the ascent path or via the marked hiking trail leading east to the "Eisernen Törl". By the way, this variant must also be chosen if you want to hike on to the Hinteralm. From the "Eisernen Törl" you follow the wide forest path downhill back to the "Tirol" and from there to the starting point.

In the upper Mürztal there are several interesting sights such as the Neuberg Abbey, the glassblowing workshop in the Kaiserhof, the Neuberg Nature Museum with the Schliefsteiner collection or the world's largest spinning wheel in Kapellen. Also the new climate change trail in Altenberg / Rax, the waterfall to the Dead Woman at Mürzsteg / Frein or the show tunnel at Mürzufer / Krampen are highly recommended as excursion destinations.
