Villa Rustica in Löffelbach

Hartberg-Umgebung

The Villa Rustica in Löffelbach near Hartberg shows the well-preserved foundation walls of a large Roman country residence from the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD.

A journey into the past. In the middle of the East Styrian hill country you will find the Villa Rustica in Löffelbach. These remains of a former Roman villa are evidence of one of the largest verifiable Roman estates in Styria. The associated farm buildings are no longer preserved, and the burial mound of the landlord's family was levelled in 1770. The Villa Rustica itself was preserved to its 4th century AD design, but the Roman manor house was finally abandoned a century later, in the 5th century AD.

The ground plan of the villa shows that it belonged to the type of peristyle villa with porticus, i.e. a villa with a courtyard surrounded by a portico and a gallery entrance. Many of the rooms were originally decorated with brightly coloured wall paintings and even equipped with an ancient form of underfloor heating. Water was also supplied in an advanced manner at the time, as was the disposal of sewage. A real luxury building from Roman times that is freely accessible today in Löffelbach.
