Stubegg Ruin

Passail

Ruin of the Knight's Castle Stubegg in the municipality Arzbegr near Passaill.

The knight's castle of Stubegg was founded in the 13th century by the "Stubenbergers" and was the only castle in Styria that was only ever inherited and is therefore still owned by this family today. Around 1600, it was the largest secular estate in Styria. In the 17th century, the castle was fortified due to the Turkish threat and a chapel dedicated to St. Anthony was built. Around 1830, the castle was covered up for tax reasons and left to decay; an engraving from 1863 already shows a ruin.

In 1975, the "Burgspiele Stubegg" association began renovating the ruins and building a stage and auditorium. Until the 2010s, plays were performed here in summer. Next to the castle is the farmstead "Meierhof Schloßmoar", which housed the Arzberg elementary school until 1986 and is now a residential building.
