Refuge to the Mesnerhaus

Grafendorf

Fantastic view - cosy get-togethers in the old parlour or in the friendly, bright annexe!

On the eastern slope of the Masenberg, at an altitude of 926 metres above sea level, surrounded by meadows and fields, is the Mesnerhaus. It is not known exactly when the sacristan's house was built. The year 1812 is carved in the doorway. In the beginning, the sacristan's house served as a school for Pongrazen and Zeilerviertel.

According to oral tradition and school records, lessons were held in the sacristan's house from 1760 to 1885. The sacristan of the church of St. Pankrazen always taught. The classroom, where up to 77 pupils could be seated, was located in today's guest room. The sacristan's house also served as a dwelling for the sacristan, who had a small farm with a few cows and pigs. The school year 1884/85 was the last in the sacristan's house. From then on, only one sacristan lived in house no. 16. At the end of April 1945, the sacristan's house was heavily shelled from the Zeilerviertel. A bullet hole from this time can still be seen today. The last sacristan moved out in 1955. Until 1985, the sacristan's house belonged to the Pongrazen district. Now the sacristan's house belongs to the municipality of Stambach.

Since 1986, the parish priest's house has been run by the Gleichweit family as a refuge.
