Parish Church Pöllau - Impression #1

Parish Church Pöllau

Pöllau

Visit the parish church Pöllau St. Vitus (former abbey church) in the Nature Park Pöllau Valley.

In the heart of the historic market town culture lovers can admire the parish church Pöllau with its marvellous frescoes as well as the castle Pöllau.

The buildings surrounding the monastery on the main square were finished in 1747. Via the gate you arrive in the actual "Stiftsbezirk" (abbey district). Here you find yourself in front of one of the most important Baroque church buildings in Styria. With a lenght of 62 meters, today's church building is the eighth largest in Styria despite only having  a third of the lenght of the famous St. Peter's Basilica. It was built in several stages between 1701 and 1723. The other dimensions of the church are also impressive: The nave height is 21.4 m, the dome height is 42 m and the tower height is 53 m. The combined surface of the 54 windows covers and area of 400 m2. The light coming in through the windows enhances the effect of the architectural design of the church.

Experience a guided tour of the church of the former Augustinian monastery and the current parish church as well as of the Baroque town center of Pöllau. Thanks to its size and layout the Baroque church often gets called the "Styrian St. Peter's Basilica". Make sure you have enough time after your guided tour to enjoy the delicacies of the region.
