Kalvarienberg - Thannhausen

Weiz

The stations of the cross on the Kalvarienberg start at the Ölbergberggruppe next to the Inn "Schlosstaverne" in the municipality Thannhausen and lead along the castle wall through the forest and end at the crucifixion group on the Kalvarienberg.

A total of 15 stations of the cross can be seen and experienced. Wanderers and those praying may draw strength for their own lives from contemplating the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus.

The first parts of the Kalvarienberg complex go back to the year 1741. At that time, Dominikus Ignaz Tschartsch, administrator of the Thannhausen estate, started the construction of this complex with the crucifixion group (Christ and the two thieves) on the hill of the Büchlberg. Two years later another four brick wayside shrines were erected on the way to Calvary and decorated with pictures of the Sorrowful Rosary.

In 1957, the Thannhausen castle administration initiated the establishment of a mount of olives on the castle wall opposite today's Gasthaus Schlosstaverne. The way from here to the Calvary corresponds in length to the Passion of Christ in Jerusalem. A detailed description of the route and explanations of pictures to the stations can be found in the brochure “Calvary Thannhausen”, which is available in the Thannhausen parish office, in the parish office on Weizberg and at the Inn Schlosstaverne opposite a voluntary donation is available.
