Garden tour Eastern Styria

The Garden Tour is an approx. 65km long tour which leads from Hartberg via Kaindorf, Ebersdorf and Hartl via Bad Waltersdorf and Buch-St. Magdalena back to Hartberg.

This tour was planned as a "leading tour" for Eastern Styria, the garden of Austria. It leads through lovely landscapes, past orchards and farm gardens, fields and bodies of water. You start in Hartberg and cycle along the Thermenradweg to Bad Waltersdorf. Via the Harter Teich and Kaindorf, you reach the Pöllau Valley and return to Hartberg via the wine-growing area around Löffelbach. Eight new cycle rest stops have been built along the tour and equipped with comfortable seating and loungers - so that cyclists can enjoy the scenery and snacks even better.

The tour leads past inns and wine taverns along the Römer Wine Route. Along the way, there are also farm stores and 24-hour vending machines where you can buy the many delicious regional foods produced by our farmers.

We would like to thank all participating municipalities and partners for the joint implementation of the garden tour. The "Garden Tour" cycle route was supported as part of the "Oststeiermark Cycle Master Plan - Implementation of Discovery Tour 2" project with funding from the regional department of the Province of Styria and was implemented in cooperation between Oststeiermark Tourismus and Regionalentwicklung Oststeiermark.

The tour leads along well-surfaced or asphalted paths, an e-bike is recommended due to the length of the route.

Start: Hartberg, Stadtpark, Start: Harter Teich, parking spaces directly by the lake Start: Kaindorf, multi-purpose hall

The tour is marked "Gartentour" throughout.

  • From the city park in Hartberg, the markings lead through the old town, out to St. Johann in der Haide (R57 or R12).
  • At St. Johann we finally change to the "Thermenradweg" R12 and cycle via Altenberg to the Steinbüchl rest area.
  • Following the R12, we reach the Weinberg rest area and soon the Haller rest area.
  • Via Wagerberg and Sonntagsberg (change to the R34) we reach Bad Waltersdorf Waltersdorf, where numerous places to stop for refreshments and shopping await us in the town center.
  • From Bad Waltersdorf we continue on the R33 to Hohenbrugg with the next rest area.
  • Now it's not far to Großhart and the Harter Teich, a highlight of the tour with a rest area on the access road to the pond (R33) = Harter Teich access point
  • Via Schmiedbach and Ebersdorf (rest area at the Pöllauer Safen) we reach Kaindorf (R33/Hopfentour) = start Kaindorf/multi-purpose hall
  • The next rest area is already waiting at the multi-purpose hall in Kaindorf, but it is nicer to sit at the Steirerteich, a few meters further on the other side of the road. We are now already on the HB 18 cycle path.
  • In St. Stefan, where you can't miss the Gothic church with a lovely rest area, we continue straight on towards Pöllau and now change to the R57/Pöllau cycle path.
  • We cycle via Schönaudorf, Winzendorf and Flattendorf to Löffelbach, the last opportunity for a stop at one of the wine taverns here, there is also a rest area here (R57).
  • Following the R57, we reach the city park in Hartberg again.

In summer, the Harter Teich pond awaits cyclists halfway along the route, where they can combine a break with a dip in the cool water.

Timetables and travel information can be found at Österreichische Bundesbahnen (ÖBB) or at Verkehrsauskunft Verbundlinie.
