Haberlstall-Round, Strassegg
From the Strassegg pass along the Mariazellerweg over to the Haberlstallhütte: a leisurely summer alpine hike in the Almenland Nature Park with a stop at just that!
The hut on the Haberlstall-Alm, high above Gasen, has been around for a long time, but has only been in use for a few years. The Pöllabauer family now offers homemade soups, various snacks and pastries to hungry hikers in and around their cozy hut. The hut is located on Mariazeller-Weg, halfway between Strassegg and Sommeralmstraße, in the middle of the alpine pasture area and has great views far out into Eastern Styria.
If you want to crown the hike with a summit cross, you can climb from the Haberlstall-Alm to Zechnerschlag/Rohregg in about half an hour and enjoy the view from 1,434 m above sea level. The path up through the pasture is clearly visible, although not marked.
The hike is quite easy to do, but there are pastures to cross. Please observe proper behavior and do not bring a dog with you during the grazing season (beginning of June - beginning of October, depending on the weather.

More information
The path to Haberlstall is marked with “path no. 730/Sommeralm”, on the way back we use the markings “Dorf Gasen/Stroßeggwirt” or “Path no. 2/equestrian path”.
Please be sure to check the opening times of the guest establishments BEFORE the hike.
Start:
GH Stroßeggwirt, Strassegg/Breitenau am Hochlantsch
- We start at the parking lot on Strassegg/Stroßeggwirt, cross the state road and climb onto “Path No. 730/Sommeralm”
- After a few steps uphill, we pass a rest area with some “pilgrim crosses”.
- It now goes steeply uphill through the forest; we orient ourselves here using the red-white-red markings on trees and stones.
- After crossing the mountain at the end of the forest, we go straight across the pasture. To the right we see the Hochschlag and behind it the racing field.
- We leave the pasture again at the Gattertor and are now back in the forest.
- We cross the forest road, continue uphill and then turn a little to the right onto the farm road.
- Before the next gate we turn left up into the forest. To the right we see the Hochlantsch, up to the left in the forest is the Mitterbachkogel, which we bypass.
- A climb over into the next pasture and we can see the Sommeralm in all its splendor: to the left the Streber, then the Stoakogl, the Plankogel and the wind turbine.
- Half right across the pasture and then we continue right along the farm path. Looking down to the left we now see Mitterbach, a district of Gasen.
- We continue along the farm road until we turn right onto the hiking trail. (“Teichalm/Sommeralm, path no. 730”)
- We walk steeply uphill to the next pasture, now we can see the Haberlstall hut in front of us, which we are heading straight towards.
- If you would like to celebrate a summit victory, you can go to the right of the hut up to Zechnerschlag/Rohregg. The path is not difficult to find, although there are no markings, but there is a summit cross at the top.
-
- After a rest at the hut, we take the easier route back to the “Stroßeggwirt” and go down to the access road.
- Now we orientate ourselves on the markings “Strassegg” and “Dorf Gasen”, at the intersection with path no. 706 we continue down to the right (“flat Stroßeggwirt hiking trail”).
- We stay on the road until we turn left into “Reiterweg/Stroßeggwirt”.
- We turn into “path no. 2/Reiterweg”, at the next fork in the road we continue straight ahead and stay on the Reiterweg.
- At the “Schwaiger, cf. Reiter” farm we walk across the farm and walk out to the state road.
- Now a few more steps up to the left and then we have reached Strassegg again, our starting point.
There are parking spaces at Strassegg, below the "Stroßeggwirt".
