St. Ruprecht an der Raab and the whole of eastern and southeastern Styria is known for its leading product, the beetle bean. The East Styrian market town of St. Ruprecht an der Raab has dedicated itself entirely to the beetle bean. The beetle bean is the flagship product of St. Ruprecht an der Raab and is considered a symbol of local culinary delights and the diverse fruit and vegetable cultivation. In addition, Estyria Naturprodukte GmbH in St. Ruprecht an der Raab, which is also home to the Steirerkraft Kernothek, is the largest producer of the Styrian beetle bean in Austria. St. Ruprecht an der Raab is home to numerous offers and products related to the purple beetle bean, with its fine creamy, marroni taste.

At several stations it is possible to gather interesting and exciting information about the Styrian beetle bean. The adventure route starts in the northern part of St. Ruprecht an der Raab (after the church) in the Obere Hauptstraße, here you can learn a lot about the history of the beetle bean. Following the street to the south you reach the main square, there you learn about the positive health aspects, ingredients and everything about the Genussregion Steirische Käferbohne g.U..

Along Untere Hauptstraße you will find the next five windows with interesting facts about cultivation, growth, harvest, protection of origin, varieties, production and processing. Finally, at the Garten-Hotel Ochensberger, you reach the last station with recipes all about the beetle bean.

The market town of St.Ruprecht is located in eastern Styria and is very easy to reach via the A2 from Vienna (approx. 1.5 hrs.) and Graz (approx. 30 min.).
  • Arrival from Vienna and from Graz: On the A2 from Vienna and from Graz take the highway exit 161 / Gleisdorf West direction B54/B64. Follow the B65 / Gleisdorfer Bundesstraße until you reach the B54 / Wechselbundesstraße. At the traffic circle take the second exit to the B64 / Rechberg-Bundesstraße. After about 6 km turn left to St. Ruprecht an der Raab.

Route planner

  • The adventure exhibition "Beetle Bean Window" starts in the Obere Hauptstraße (after the church towards the north) at the Adeg - Markt Rosenberger. There we will find at the first window "The beetle bean in the wheel of time" everything worth knowing about the history of the beetle bean and its origin and how and when it came to Austria and Styria.
  • Afterwards, walk south past the baroque church and the Grotto of Peace - by the way, it is worth taking a look inside the church and the Grotto of Peace - to the main square - more precisely, to the next window directly at the Raiffeisenbank St. Ruprecht an der Raab where you will be informed about the ingredients and the health aspect of the beetle bean. This window is designed by the NMS St. Ruprecht an der Raab.
  • Only a few meters next to it at Herwig's Café Central (the homemade ice cream in summer is definitely worth a little "sin" :-)) we will find the third window on the topic of cultivation, cultivation, growth and harvest.
  • Right across the street at the Marktgemeindeamt, it's all about the protection of origin of the Styrian Beetle Bean PDO and the Genussregion Steirische Käferbohne PDO.
  • Now we follow the Untere Hauptstraße southwards until we reach the fifth window at Untere Haupstraße 22 (Lux GmbH company). There we will find interesting information about the processing and the largest beetle bean producer in Austria - the company Estyra Naturprodukte Gmbh, which is also home to the Steirerkraft Kernothek.
  • If we walk a few meters further we will come to Untere Haupstraße 20 (Dr. Meister) and find information about the importance of the beetle bean and the most important beetle bean varieties.
  • At window number seven (Untere Haupstraße 14 - Grazer Wechselseitige), elementary school children romp about the beetle bean.
  • Afterwards, the tour continues leisurely south to the Garten-Hotel Ochensberger. Here we will find recipes with the beetle bean at the eighth window. Of course, we should definitely stop here and taste your way through the menu, which always offers dishes to the Styrian beetle bean PDO.

There are several parking spaces available at the main square of St. Ruprecht. Alternatively, about 150 m away, past the Hotel Locker & Legere and the Marktheurigen Strobl, there are numerous parking spaces at the large park in the middle of St. Ruprecht an der Raab.
