St. Georgen ob Judenburg

The village - formerly called Praitenfurt - is surrounded by a peaceful and idyllic landscape.

The municipality of St. Georgen ob Judenburg, which belongs to the Murtal district, has 859 inhabitants and is situated on the upper reaches of the Mur, between Judenburg and Unzmarkt-Frauenburg.

Long before the birth of Christ, a long-distance route between Italy and the Danube - the "Norische Hauptstraße" - led through our present-day municipality, and the Romans built the AD PONTEM postal station near Nußdorf. Slavic farmers settled here from the end of the 6th century AD. Since the 10th century there was a large estate in St. Georgen, on the site of today's village square, which belonged to the Praitenfurters. This knightly family had a church built in the immediate vicinity of the farm and in a document of 1,277 the village is mentioned for the first time as SANCTO GEORIO. Subsequently, the name of the village and settlement Praitenfurt, which had been used until then, was gradually replaced by the patronymic name.

From the 11th and 12th centuries, the noble families of the Eppensteins and the Liechtensteins exercised the rights of landlordship for a long time. The later eventful history of the community remained closely linked to that of the region. Wars, economic decline and catastrophes, such as the great village fire in St. Georgen on 25 May 1878, were always followed by peace, new beginnings and reconstruction. On 1 January 1961, the formerly independent municipalities of Pichlhofen, Scheiben and Wöll merged with the municipality of St. Georgen ob Judenburg.
