Historic spa town of Bad Gleichenberg

Bad Gleichenberg

Nestled in a volcanic landscape, protected by the Gleichen Mountains, which are nevertheless only gently wooded hills, surrounded by vineyards, meadows and deciduous forests, the historic spa town of Bad Gleichenberg invites you to relax and recharge your batteries.

In 1834, the governor of Styria, Imperial Count Mathias Constantin von Wickenburg, founded the spa of Bad Gleichenberg. He had the local healing springs tapped and systematically laid out the resort. Very quickly Bad Gleichenberg developed into one of the most sought-after and prestigious health resorts in the monarchy. Members of the European ruling dynasties, international nobility, high bourgeoisie and important military officers populated the place during the "season", which at that time lasted from May to September.

Bad Gleichenberg is still full of traces of this great past. The Curmuseumsverein works to keep this history alive and make it accessible to the public. At several stations of the attractively designed "Historical Tour" you can follow an exciting journey of discovery of the fascinating history of Bad Gleichenberg.

I love this corner of the earth...

Already Peter Rosegger succumbed to the special charms of Bad Gleichenberg when he wrote down this declaration of love in 1906. What has remained is the fascination of a landscape that uniquely combines history and tradition with an enchanting region. It is a harmony that has grown over 180 years. Strolling in the spa park, let your soul dangle - past old villas and the giant trees that spread their branches invitingly. In summer, they provide soothing shade. They radiate a timeless tranquility, in a green oasis, the green salon of Bad Gleichenberg. The picturesque spa town in the thermal & volcanic country owes its fame to the healing springs, which were already known to the Romans. With its existence since 1834, the spa town of Bad Gleichenberg is the oldest in Styria and is located on a former volcanic area at 300 meters above sea level.

A place full of relaxation

Since 2015, Bad Gleichenberg has had a redesigned main square. As a place of encounter and enjoyable lingering, it represents a successful interplay between revitalized and restored historical building fabric and new architecture and, including fountains, blends into a harmonious ensemble.

The highly developed health competence is also of great importance in Bad Gleichenberg. Especially respiratory complaints and skin diseases can be treated very well by special treatments, for example by the Gleichenberg brine, in the spa Bad Gleichenberg. This holistic recreation is rounded off in the Therme der Ruhe, whose outdoor pool blends beautifully with the adjacent spa park. But you can also immerse yourself in the Bad Gleichenberg outdoor pool with its 50m pool and recreational facilities including a diving tower, beach volleyball court and children's playground. The highlight of any visit to Bad Gleichenberg is also the Styrassic Park with its now over 85 life-size dinosaurs.
