The Gleichenberg Railway was opened in 1931 as an electric standard gauge railroad. Over a length of 21 km, it overcomes high gradients, making it one of the steepest railroads in the Alpine countries. The affectionate name Dschungelexpress refers to the meadows, forests, hills and valleys it passes through. As a passenger, you will be offered the natural spectacle "Sounds of Nature" during the ride if you wish.
From Feldbach to Bad Gleichenberg
On a trip with the Gleichenberg Railway, you can expect much more than a train ride from Feldbach to Bad Gleichenberg. Along the way, you will be immersed in a true picture book landscape, which - thanks to the low speed of only about 40 km/h - you can experience, discover and enjoy at your leisure.
The locals affectionately refer to the Gleichenberg Railway as the "Jungle Express". Not for nothing, because along its route meadows, forests, orchards and vineyards alternate with each other. If you let your gaze wander further into the landscape, it falls on the gentle hills and valleys of the thermal and volcanic region of Styria and the neighboring Slovenian mountains. From time to time, one catches a glimpse of the local wildlife - deer, hares and various birds are not uncommon here.
Steeply uphill with the Gleichenberg Railway
The Gleichenberg Railway was opened on June 15, 1931 and is a single-track, electrified standard-gauge railroad (1800 V direct current). On its route length of 21 km it overcomes gradients up to 42 per mille. This makes it not only steeper than the Semmering Railway, but also one of the steepest adhesion lines in the Alpine countries. The historic vehicles from the 1930s, when the Gleichenberg Railway was built, are still in use.
Railroad hiking trail
People especially like to combine a train ride with a hike. The popular Gleichenberg Railway Hiking Trail leads largely along the railroad line. Afterwards, we recommend finishing the tour with delicious regional specialties in a Buschenschank around Bad Gleichenberg or Feldbach.
