The gentle hills and the hot, dry climate of Styria’s wine-growing regions are perfect breeding grounds for exquisite wines. In total, there are eight Styrian Wine Roads in three wine-growing regions: the Styrian Spa Country, Southern Styria and Western Styria.

The wine-growing regions of Southern Styria are characterised by high hills and steep vineyards.
The vines of the Styrian Spa Country are firmly rooted in volcanic rock, surrounded by gentle hills and a Pannonian climate.
Western Styria is the federal state’s smallest wine-growing area and Central Europe’s main rosé wine-producing area.

The Wine Roads of Styria are the easiest and most pleasurable way to get to know the federal state’s wine-growing regions. What’s more, many wine-themed experiences and culinary highlights are waiting for pleasure-seekers along the different wine routes.

The South Styrian Wine Road

On the South Styrian Wine Road, tradition meets modernity. The landscape is characterised by contemporary vineyard architecture and beautifully restored old buildings. The region’s vineyards, mixed fruit orchards, forests and fields have been cultivated for many generations. Local traditions are preserved with great care and passion.

Schilcher Wine Road

From spring to late autumn, you can discover little treasures and delights along the Schilcher Wine Road. Expect roses in bloom, picturesque landscapes, top-class wine taverns and inviting accommodation!

Klapotetz Wine Trail

This wine route owes its name to the special windmills (called “Klapotetzen”) lining the way. The road winds its way through vineyards and mixed forests surrounded by marvellous panoramic views.

Sausal Wine Route

Would you like to explore the hills of the southern Styrian wine-growing region away from the crowds? Then the Sausal Wine Route is the perfect choice for you to enjoy picturesque landscapes, old traditions and breathtaking views.

Klöcher Wine Road

The Klöcher Wine Road starts in the thermal spa town of Bad Radkersburg and takes you up north to Fehring. At Vinothek Klöch, you can sample the famous Klöcher Traminer wine and enjoy scenic views of the surrounding vineyards and castles such as Kapfenstein Castle.

Southeast Styrian Hill Country Wine Route

This delightful wine route starts at the Klöcher Wine Road in Frutten-Gießelsdorf. Passing by Straden, Wieden and Perbersdorf, it takes you all the way to St. Peter am Ottersbach.

Thermenland Wine Route

Vineyards and pumpkin fields, fruit orchards and castles, gentle hills and hot springs: If you’re looking for a nice spot for a break, this wine route is full of them. What’s more, there are six thermal spas located along the way, offering year-round relaxation.

East Styrian Roman Wine Route

The location of the wine-growing areas in Styria between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea shapes the wines of the three wine regions of Southern Styria, Volcanic Styria and Western Styria. Guided tours of the cellars and tastings give you a glimpse behind the scenes.

The “Klapotetz”: landmark of the Styrian wine-growing region

Originally, the “Klapotetz” served the purpose of scaring away birds trying to snatch forbidden grapes from the vineyard. Today, it is much more than just a noisy scarecrow. It has become a symbol of Styrian wine-making tradition and a well-known landmark of Southern and Eastern Styria.

Good to know: The name “Klapotetz“ is a Slavonic term that means “windmill”.
