Schloss Kirchberg am Walde

Grafendorf

Kirchberg am Walde Castle is a listed building and has served the province of Styria as an agricultural college since 1923.

The castle was built around 1130 by Count Ekberg II of Formbach-Pitten as a castle. It was the seat of power and the starting point for the settlement and cultivation of the municipal area. After its destruction by the Turks, the castle was rebuilt in 1532 by the Counts Trauttmansdorff, who were the owners from 1443 to 1669. From 1670 to 1802 it belonged to the Counts Auersperg, who are commemorated by the stone Auersperg coat of arms on the main portal. In 1802 Hieronymus Wolf bought the manor and it remained in his family for almost a century. Then the castle changed its owners several times. In 1923 it was acquired by the province of Styria.

According to the chronogram, the protected Marian column near the castle dates back to 1667 and was probably erected in gratitude for the victory over the Turks in the Battle of Mogersdorf in 1664.
