Pilgrimage Church Schüsserlbrunn

Breitenau am Hochlantsch

Schüsserlbrunn is a popular excursion destination and a much-visited pilgrimage church on the "Lantschmauer" at the foot of the highest mountain in the region, the Hochlantsch. The little wooden church at 1,363 m above sea level can only be reached on foot.

The doors to the church are open for masses (May - October) so you can look inside. Otherwise you can visit the church all year round, but the doors are closed.

The name "Schüsserlbrunn" is derived from the healing spring that rises from the rock face and is collected there in small "rock bowls" and is said to have a healing effect, especially for eye problems. Many sagas and legends are entwined around the square.

Today, services are celebrated in the chapel several times a year - mainly on the Marian holidays - the church is still a popular destination for groups of pilgrims who are easy to walk. From the inn "Steirischer Jockl" - a popular place for a rest and a stop with a breathtaking view - it goes down 198 steps to the little church.

The pilgrimage church can be reached via several hiking trails:

  • Hochlantsch circuit: circular route from the Teichalm, 15 km / 550 m ascent
  • Through the Bärenschützklamm: starting from the Breitenau or Mixnitz, approx. 25 km / 1,345 hm
  • Pastor Kelz pilgrimage route: going out. from the pilgrimage church St. Erhard in Breitenau, approx. 12 km / 732 hm
