Hartberg Gmoos

Hartberg

A Natura 2000 Europe protected area on the outskirts of the historic town of Hartberg in eastern Styria

Explore natural history(s) up close. The Hartberger Gmoos has blossomed: from a silted-up lake to an ecologically valuable, green island. A themed trail gives an insight into the world of ecology.

The "Nature Experience - Hartberger Gmoos" gives insights into the local natural diversity. Europe-wide endangered and therefore protected species such as the blue buffalo, the kingfisher, the red-backed shrike or the greater mouse-eared bat find a home here.

The 70-hectare wetland, just south of the town of Hartberg, has a checkered history. Centuries ago, before it was declared a nature reserve and European protection area, there was a large lake here. In the last century, people wanted to establish a bathing lake or build a large hall. Today it is a local recreation area and quiet area for numerous animal and plant species that only a few cities can boast.

Over 150 bird species have been identified. The low moor area is partly accessible via paths and artificial ponds with a playground in a park-like landscape. They invite you to relax, but also to experience nature.
