Augustinian Canons' Monastery Vorau

Vorau

Between the "Wechselmassiv" and its foothills in the north and the Masenberg in the south, the only remaining Augustinian monastery in Styria rests on a wide hill: STIFT VORAU

Vorau Abbey presents itself as a uniform baroque monastery in which the more than 800-year tradition of monastic life tries to combine with the requirements of the present in the church and the world. The Vorau collegiate church is one of the most glamorous baroque churches in Styria due to the lavish abundance of frescoes, the lavish gilding of all wooden sculptures and above all the magnificent furnishings of the high altar. This mighty hall with a ring of chapels on both sides was rebuilt from scratch by provost Matthias Singer in 1660-1662 after demolishing the old Gothic basilica according to plans by Domenico Sciassia while leaving the towers intact. The imposing high altar, built in 1704 based on an ingenious design by Matthias Steindl, is the artistic highlight of the church. He also created the much admired pulpit, completed in 1706.

This location is also perfect for celebrations of all kinds. For appointments please contact us directly.
