In Hartberg, five annual markets have been held since time immemorial (the first market facility in 1128 on Herrengasse, referred to as the Gassenmarkt).
From the year 1147, a market area was established in the area of today's main square. In 1166, Hartberg became a FORUM = MARKET. The right to hold markets in the town is based on princely privileges, specifically those during Pentecost and those on St. Coloman's Day (October 13), which has been moved to St. Catherine's Day, and the privilege from the year 1436, and that on Ash Wednesday from the privilege of the year 1512.
The markets were often the only opportunity for the region to meet its supply needs.
Currently, about 70 market vendors visit our markets. Visit our markets to keep the tradition alive.
