Erzberg Tour - Hohentauern, Kaiserau, Admont, Gesäuse, Erzberg

Freedom on two wheels with a magnificent view from the Kaiserau, through the Gesäuse - one of the last unspoiled natural jewels of Austria - to Eisenerz, where the hardest enduro race (Erzbergrodeo) takes place, then it continues via Leoben to Spielberg.
Over the Niedere Tauern our tour leads us from Spielberg via Fohnsdorf, Oberzeiring to the pass Hohentauern. We continue along the beautifully constructed route to Trieben. Here the route leads us via Admont through the Gesäuse National Park. The Gesäuse is the 16km long "breakthrough valley of the Enns" between Admont and Hieflau. Especially impressive is the fast white water that accompanies us here. In Admont we could make a short stop and visit the largest monastery library.

After Hieflau the tour continues towards Eisenerz - for those who want to extend the tour there is the possibility to take the Hochsteiermark-Mariazell Tour across the Wild Alps.

But we continue the road towards Eisenerz. Shortly before this small town, whose development in the last century was strongly dependent on the development of ore mining on the Erzberg, we see the Erzberg appearing in front of us.

Here you can switch to a few more horsepower - because there is the possibility to climb the Erzberg in a Hauly (860 horsepower giant) - much easier than the Enduro riders who try to conquer this mountain every year at the Erzbergrodeo.

When we leave Eisenerz we already see a monumental bridge in the mountain in front of us, we drive up the gradient (up to 11%) on the well developed mountain road, after a left turn there is a parking lot on the left side - this place is the perfect place for a great photo of the Erzberg.

Don't be frightened as we continue on, because behind the next curves the rotor blades of a wind power plant appear, which rises directly beside the road. After that we are right on the Präbichl pass with a height of 1.226m.

Now we descend on the well developed track towards Vordernberg - past the historic wheel works, the tractor museum until we land in Trofaich, a residential community near Leoben.

Here we could shorten the way by taking the direction St. Michael and passing the Trabochersee to St. Michael. But we stay straight on towards St. Peter Freienstein and on to Leoben (the big company you see on the left is voestalpine Donawitz - which produces, among other things, the longest rail in the world). In Leoben we drive in the direction of Göss - here we can decide whether we drive in the direction of Hinterberg and St. Michael on the S 36 or on the main road back to Kobenz where we make a small turn-off to Seckau to the Benedictine monastery. Afterwards there is the possibility to make a detour to the beetle museum in the Gaal, before we return to Spielberg. If you are still interested in motor sports, you can take a 90-minute tour of the Red Bull Ring (by appointment only) which is normally closed to visitors.

More information

Follow the S36 to the exit Zeltweg Ost/Spielberg, turn right towards Red Bull Ring. Follow the signs.
The tour consists almost exclusively of winding mountain roads or the Enns Valley, we overcome numerous vertical meters on beautifully constructed roads, most of which have little traffic.
Before iron ore it pays to make a short detour to the Leopoldsteinersee, the road turns left and after a few hundred meters leads us to a beautiful mountain lake. The temperature does not invite to swim, but especially on hot days it is pleasantly cool there. Besides, the lake is simply a very nice place to take a break.
In general, the Red Bull Ring is easily accessible from Knittelfeld station and Judenburg.
Outside the big events there are enough parking possibilities.
The tour leads through two major tourist regions - the Urlausregion Murtal - www.murtal.at and Hochsteiermark - www.hochsteiermark.at The motorcycle or classic car map of the Murtal adventure region, available at the tourism offices or at many businesses in the Murtal region.
