Hunter's cross on the Lobmingtaler-Rosenkogel

This "short" summit hike, starting from Großlobming, leads mostly through the forest and impresses with a cozy summit spot.

The village of Großlobming in the municipality of Lobmingtal lies at an altitude of 641 m above sea level and is only a few kilometers from Knittelfeld. The village center is the starting point for numerous hikes and has several inns where you can stop for a bite to eat after your hike.

The tour is perfect for "forest hikers", as the majority of the trail leads through the forest. The views in between provide a beautiful insight into the hiking region of the Murtal. The view extends to the largest inner-alpine basin in Styria (Judenburg-Knittelfeld basin) and the Seetal, Seckau Alps and Wölzer Tauern mountains towering behind it. With a difference in altitude of just under 400 m, this hike is suitable all year round and can be described as a short summit tour. As a side tip, it is worth mentioning that the hike can be extended from the Lobmingtaler-Rosenkogel. On the one hand, there is the Lobmingtaler Höhenweg from Großlobming to Kleinlobming or the Steinplan via Kalchbauer.

At the parking lot (1), 641 m, of the Raiffeisenbank in Großlobming, we follow the yellow signpost with the inscription "Jägerkreuz am Lobmingtaler-Rosenkogel". We walk through the village past Gasthof Wulz and continue in the direction of Kleinlobming. After a few meters, we turn left into the Sulzbachgraben and follow the avenue to the bridge, where a paved dead-end road runs parallel to the road on the right. Just behind the house we see a yellow signpost indicating the direction. From now on, we follow the well-marked hiking trail, which leads steadily uphill on hollow paths and forest roads until we turn right at a forest road junction. From now on we hike slightly uphill or almost flat. At the high-voltage power line, we have a beautiful view of the Judenburg-Knittelfeld basin with the Seetal Alps and Wölzer Tauern behind it. Turn left at a crossroads and continue along the forest road until you reach the Lobmingtaler-Rosenkogel (2), 1008 m, just before your destination. A newly erected hunter's cross with a wooden bench and the magnificent view towards the Seckau Alps invite you to linger. The way back is via the ascent route.

The nearest train station is Knittelfeld. From here, take bus line 847 to Großlobming or Kleinlobming. Please note that at weekends and during vacation periods this line is only available to a very limited extent. Here you can travel the 5 km to Großlobming or 11 km to Kleinlobming with a regional cab company - available directly at Knittelfeld station. If you stay overnight in one of the hotels, they often offer a pick-up service from the station.
