Today's church, which was consecrated to the Virgin Mary in 1490, is one of the most important from the time of Emperor Friedrich III. Particularly worth seeing are the group of figures of Anna Selbdritt (1430) above the tabernacle, and the late Gothic winged altar (1524) from a Carinthian workshop. The two side altars date from the beginning of the 18th century. The vestibule on the north side with its figural decoration, called the "Paradeis", is also worth seeing.
The late-Gothic, two-aisled hall church is one of the most important sacral buildings in Styria. In 1140 an Augustinian canon monastery was founded here near an existing Marienkirche. As early as 1143, this was moved to the quiet plateau, today's Seckau, which is not visible from the Murtal. This magnificent church was built from 1437-1448 under the provost Andreas Ennsthaler from Seckau and the master builder Niklas Velbacher from Admont as a token of gratitude and in memory of the foundation of this original Augustinian canon's foundation on Marein soil.
The church was severely damaged during a Turkish invasion in 1480 and was rebuilt under Provost Johannes Dürnberger and re-consecrated in 1490. The room, which is flooded with light through the tracery windows, contains rich architectural sculpture, unique, highly symbolic decorative paintings in the vaulting fields, as well as a wall fresco (3.5 x 7.9 m), which was only discovered during the last interior restoration (2000) and depicts the crowning of the Virgin Mary by the Trinity. Rich figural decoration, the Baroque high altar (1703), which is sensitively adapted to the Gothic choir end, and the most valuable object in terms of art history, a late Gothic winged altar dating from 1524, attract many art and culture lovers.
