Burgruine Frauenburg

Unzmarkt-Frauenburg

Unzmarkt-Frauenburg is the westernmost of the three Murg communities and is a historic market town nestled at the foot of the Seetal Alps. A walk through the town reveals many lovingly preserved details that point to a glorious past.

Time travel …… The ruins of the Frauenburg castle towers over the Murtal and invites travelers to linger from afar. The Frauenburg was once the favorite seat of the minstrel Ulrich von Liechtenstein, but today there are still many legends surrounding the romantic square and the well-preserved inner courtyard bears witness to a bygone era. The Frauenburg, which is located on a hill with a favorable defense technology, was first mentioned in a document around 1260, but may have existed in a different form long before it was bequeathed to the famous minstrel Ulrich von Liechtenstein from his father Dietmar. According to legend, it once belonged to a knight Reinprecht who, because of his violence, could be described as a robber baron. In the 13th century Ulrich von Liechtenstein built the residential tower (or palace) that still looks far into the country, crowned by battlements, protected by a tent roof, and on the valley side with two arched windows and column capitals evidencing the Romanesque architectural style. This oldest part of the castle has been best preserved. Castle and church tours can be carried out on request. Registration and information at the municipal office.
