St. Lorenzen - Frauenalpe

This easy yet long hike runs from the world championship host town of St. Lorenzen am Kreischberg to the summit of the Frauenalpe with its superb views.
Starting at the Kreischberg Tourist Information Office, we follow the signposting into the Lorenzergraben, where the valley becomes relatively narrow. The ascent continues towards the Frauenalpe, passing a number of farmsteads, up to the Grazerhütte (mountain hut, not serviced). The alpine landscape also becomes broader and more sprawling here. The route slowly becomes more wooded; we leave the logging road and set off on a footpath through the forest towards the peak until we reach the tree line. A spectacular panoramic view of the surrounding mountains awaits you here. In fine weather, you can even see the neighbouring states of Carinthia on one side and Salzburg on the other. The summit is now in sight.A heavy storm severely damaged the summit cross in December 2017, but the Alpine Association had a replacement erected shortly before Christmas.

By car from Vienna: Via Semmering, Bruck/Mur, Judenburg, Scheifling, Murau, Kreischberg.

From the starting point, the Kreischberg information office, you first hike down into the valley into the Lorenzergraben (path no. 130) until you reach the signposted junction to the Frauenalpe (path no. 2) on the left. On this path (partly forest path) you go over the Schafflinger, Grazer and Reiter farms to the Grazerhütte at 1,330m above sea level. Here you leave the forest path and walk along the designated footpath no. 2 through the forest uphill to the Frauenalpe. The last section allows a clear all-round view, and of course the same applies to the 1,997m high summit. The descent takes place on the route known from the way there.

Alternative descent: from the summit via the Murauer Hütte further to Murau and then with the Murtalbahn or bus back to St. Lorenzen.

  • At the peak/Trogscharte fork at 1,854m, you can walk approx. 250m towards the Trogscharte peak and refresh yourself at the spring
