Gstoder

A beautiful, family-friendly alpine walk on this magnificent panoramic mountain that starts in St. Ruprecht ob Murau.
At an altitude of 2,140m, the Gstoder is the highest peak in the Murberge, which in turn is a small mountain range in the Central Alps. The state border between Salzburg and Styria lies at the summit. Due to its location on the eastern end of the Lungau region, the mountain is also nicknamed the "Grenzwächter" ("border guard"). Lying south of the striking, pyramid-shaped peak, which is made of mica slate, is a large plateau above the tree line, featuring the Dörfler Alm and the Payeralm. Hikers find the Gstoder appealing for its isolated location, which guarantees sweeping views on fine days. From the high plateau below the summit, you can see valleys such as the Katschtal and the Krakautal and even into neighbouring Lungau. The alpine meadows on the Styria-Salzburg border guarantee a particularly enjoyable walk, which is also suitable for families with children.
