In the rock face on the way from Grundlsee/Gößl to Wildgössl is the salt kiln cave.
The Salzofenhöhle is of great archaeological importance and was in all likelihood a Stone Age cult site, and in any case the highest Ice Age hunting station in Austria.
Here, 34,000-year-old bones of cave bears and stone tools of the people living at that time were found. Among the finds was also a bone flute, the oldest musical instrument discovered on Austrian soil.
Accessible during the summer months in suitable weather.
Hiking in the Ausseerland Salzkammergut is free!
