Mountain tour on the Loser

A mountainous circular hike to the local mountain of Altaussee, which offers wonderful views as far as the Hohe Tauern, the Dachstein and the Tote Gebirge.
From the alpine pastures near the Augstsee to the karst terrain, everything is inside on this tour. An encounter with a flock of sheep on the Loser summit is quite possible. The round tour can of course be tackled clockwise or counter-clockwise. For those who are not quite free from giddiness, the ascent from the eastern shore of the Augstsee is more recommended, i.e. counterclockwise.

More information

The best way to get to Altaussee is to plan with google.at/maps
From the parking lot above the Loserhütte, walk down the access road to the hut, cross the ski slope there, which is also recognizable in summer, diagonally to the west and then climb the marked path, first between the last trees of the larch stand, then in the open up the steep slope towards Loser. Here the first views are already offered down to the Augstalm below the enormous avalanche obstructions, to the Altausseer lake and beyond.

Once at the top of the saddle, you reach a fork in the road. Keep to the left and hike towards the Loser summit. Before you reach the summit cross, you will see cascade-like rock formations below the path. The path through the "Loser-Törl" leads up here from below. The summit is reached.

After the enjoyable summit rest, you descend the same path again to the previously mentioned fork, but now go straight along the mountain ridge in the direction of Hochanger. Soon you reach the Loserfenster, an interesting rock formation.

One looks through the window down to the Gschwandalm and on the opposite side to the Schönberg. Afterwards, the path leads above the top station of the Loserfenster lift over very rocky karst terrain in the direction of Atterkogel and a little later very steeply down to the right to Augstsee.

From here you can again enjoy the views into the Tote Gebirge. From the lift station there is the possibility to use a not so steep path to the Augstsee. Arrived at the lake, a cooling bath is announced, or at least the feet can rest. Then you descend to the mountain restaurant "Loseralm" and hike below the pine-covered rock walls in a westerly direction to the valley station of the chair lift. Below this station you are already back at the solar panels of the solar power plant and thus at the parking lot.

A stop on the terrace of the Loserhütte is definitely recommended, not only because of the excellent cream slices, but also because of the wonderful view.

An ascent to the Loser summit through the so-called "Loser-Törl" is a special tour. Accompaniment by locals who know the area is highly recommended.
