Diving in Lake Altaussee

Altaussee

Diving in the Altaussee lake.

Lake Altaussee is one of the most scenic lakes in the Salzkammergut. The water has a bright dark blue color - the "dark blue inkwell" as Lake Altaussee is also called.

The lake is located at 712 meters above sea level and is about 72 meters deep. The northern shore of the lake is easier to reach than the southern part of the lake. Up to the hotel at the lake, access by car is permitted - please note the short-term parking zone and the parking fee!

Just after the hotel on the lake, a narrow hiking trail begins towards the east. There also already begins the diving zone, Kahlseneck. Mixed - this is a short but apt description of the northern lakeside area of Lake Altaussee. Only in the rear part of the lake does the typical fauna and flora of alpine waters reveal itself: waterweed, stoneworts (various species) adorn the shallower area - occasionally the one or other lake trout or even a rainbow trout flits by. The lucky Neptune disciple also discovers one of the few 'wrecks' - old, sunken rowboats that could serve as a photo motif in good weather. Smaller rocks, boulders but also mud and sediment areas from which now and then a tree, resembling a memorial, protrudes, delight the diver.

"Beautiful, but cold" is the unanimous verdict after a Lake Altaussee dive.
