Stage 11 From Glacier to Wine North Route Alpine Variant Gesäuse Heßhütte - Radmer

The alpine variant in stage 11 of the hiking route "From glacier to wine" between the Heßhütte and Radmer requires absolute surefootedness, since especially the descent to Radmer in the face of the Lugauer involves certain technical difficulties. The first kilometers of the tour are identical to the main route. Via the beautifully situated Sulzkaralm we reach the crossing point at the Bärenhöhle, where the main trail branches off to the south to the Haselkaralm and finally leads to Radmer an der Hasel. With the alpine variant, however, we continue hiking the 01 path to bypass the Lugauer to the north and come to Radmer an der Stube.
As an imposing elevation in the southeast of the Ennstal Alps, the Lugauer, a huge perpendicular layered stone dome between Hieflau and Radmertal, appears as a proud triangular figure. It impresses with its double peak undisputedly as a mountain personality. It owes its well-known nickname "Styrian Matterhorn" to the view from the west, because from the east it looks more like a pyramid.

More information

Detaillierte Informationen zur Anreise finden Sie hier.

The 11th stage of the hiking route "From Glacier to Wine" leads from the well-known Heßhütte (Tel. +43 664 4308060) in the Gesäuse via the Sulzkaralm and past the Lugauer into the Radmertal, a small side valley that has nestled between the Gesäuse and the Eisenerz Alps. We follow the main route to the Bährenhöhle trail junction.

Our alpine variant takes us north at this crossroads. We keep to the left to hike gently uphill past the summit of the Goldeck and then a bit steeper over serpentines to the small Scheucheggalm at the foot of the Lugauer. Continuing on the 01 path, we go uphill again for about two kilometers, where we keep left at the junction below the Lugauer peak, and from now on we only hike downhill towards Radmer.

But please pay attention: Descent does not always mean that it is a leisurely hike, because at first it still goes downhill in alpine terrain, partly over large boulders and serpentines that require concentration and surefootedness. Soon, however, we reach a shady forest that takes us past the former imperial hunting lodge to the village of Radmer an der Stube (tourist information Tel. +43 3635 2110), where we rejoin the main route. By the way, through this variant we have somewhat shortened the following 12th stage, which leads to Eisenerz.

If you want it more alpine, go around the Lugauer in the north - details of the variant can be found here. Attention: alpine experience is a must!
