This impressive riding route in the Ausseerland region leads from Bad Aussee to Tauplitz over a distance of around 30 kilometers—a varied journey through different landscapes, historic paths, and past cultural highlights. The highlight: the passage at the foot of the imposing Kulmschanze, the largest natural ski jump in the world.
The route starts at the Stadionstüberl in Bad Aussee. The route leads through Sießreith, where the road branches off to the left towards Eselsbach at the hardware store. The trail continues through the village to Scheibnergasse, which climbs steeply to the Fuhrmannskirche St. Leonhard church. On the “Alte Salzstraße” (Old Salt Road), it passes the former Almwirt inn and the turnoff to Grundlsee lake up to the Radling Pass.
Before the steep descent of the pass road, a forest road branches off to the left uphill. The trail leads over the “Loank” into the forest at Knoppenberg. This is followed by a steep descent via the “Kranawetter” to Kainisch. Here, the trail continues on the old federal highway to Pichl, where it crosses the B145. After crossing the railway in Mühlreith, you will come to the R19 cycle path.
Following the R19, you pass a sawmill and climb a short hill to the Stieger snack bar. Before that, a forest path branches off at the cattle grid and leads to the Steinitzenalm. Leave this on your left and you will come to the Almgrabenstraße above. Follow this for a short distance before another forest road leads uphill to the right to the Langmoosgraben and later to the Hallbachgraben. Via Hörmannhalt, you reach the youth ski jumping center in Kragl and the Salza reservoir.
Keep left at the lake, pass OptimaMed Bad Mitterndorf, and turn right at a chapel. The trail leads through the Eckwald forest, well signposted towards Krungl. From there, follow the Krunglbach stream uphill to the junction just before Krungl. At the end of the ski jump, the natural scenery is once again impressive. From here, the destination of Klachau/Tauplitz is already in sight.
This regional crossing is ideal for fit riders who love trail riding in Austria and value scenic diversity, history, and sporting highlights. For anyone who wants to experience freedom on horseback, this ride is an absolute highlight.
