Mühlen-See-Kulm-Hitzmannsdorf circuit

This wonderful hike leads from Mühlen via the town of See to Kulm and over panoramic meadows and paths back to Hitzmannsdorf and the town center of Mühlen.
In the town of See in St. Marein near Neumarkt, as the name of the district shows, a silted lake was rebuilt. The lake is a destination worth seeing, not only because of the leisure activities in summer and winter, but simply because of the enormous scenic appeal. The lake is also located on an important north-south bird migration route near the Ramsauer nature reserve Hörfeld.

The B 97 leads via Stadl/Mur to Murau. There at the roundabout towards St. Lambrecht to Murauer train station and further towards St. Lambrecht. Via Laßnitz near Murau you reach St. Lambrecht, which is already in the nature park. Continue towards Mariahof, then to Neumarkt, after Neumarkt and St. Marein turn left towards Mühlen. Follow the main road, then turn left to Mühlen to the town center.

Arrival from Eastern Austria/HungaryAt the motorway junction in St. Michael near Leoben, take the S 36 towards Klagenfurt. Past Knittelfeld and Judenburg to Scheifling. In Scheifling continue towards Klagenfurt to Neumarkt, via Unzmarkt and Perchau am Sattel you reach Neumarkt. Drive through Neumarkt and St. Marein, then turn left towards Mühlen. Follow the main road, then turn left to Mühlen to the town center.

Arrival from southern Austria/ItalyVia Klagenfurt on the S 37 past St. Veit/Glan, Treibach and Friesach. In Friesach continue towards Vienna, via Dürnstein and Wildbad towards Neumarkt. After the gorge and just before St. Marein, turn right towards Mühlen. Follow the main road, then turn left to Mühlen.

From the town center of Mühlen, go north slightly uphill along the Görtschitzbach for about 4.5 km to the “Mooswiesen” intersection. There you turn right for about 1.3 km to the town of See. Directly in the vicinity of the chapel is the small but extremely romantic lake with the island accessible via a bridge. The Seestüberl invites you to stop by during the summer months.

From the town of See you walk 1.3 km back to the Mooswiesen intersection. At the left-hand bend, turn right and go through the high forest to the Kulm plateau. Here you have a wonderful view of the Zirbitzkogel massif and, to the west, the limestone massif of the Grebenze, whose southern hill is already in Carinthia. After about 2 km you come to Oberdorf, where you continue for about 1 km in the direction of Dörfling, where you turn left and cross the gentle ridge. After 600m you reach the turnoff to the right towards Hitzmannsdorf, which we reach after 1.3 km. Now only 1 km separates us from our starting point in Mühlen.

Tip: Be sure to take your bathing suit with you - on hot summer days we can take a refreshing jump into the lake!
