From the 4-Mountain Ski Area to small but charming family resorts

Styria's ski resorts

Small and family-friendly or internationally renowned: The ski resorts in the green heart of Austria are as varied as the scenic beauty of Styria. Several top ski resorts offer all kinds of extras throughout winter season. They include, for instance, modern snow-making facilities or an app that displays the distance skied and the number of lift rides.

The small and family-friendly ski resorts, on the other hand, are located away from any major hustle and bustle, allowing you to experience the authentic charm of Styria.

One thing is certain: Hardly anywhere else can you find such a wide range of skiing and snowboarding options – from the highest peaks to the fascinating valleys between Planai, Stuhleck and Kreischberg. From culinary delights served in the ski huts and on their sundecks to sports events such as the FIS Alpine Ski and Snowboard World Championships or the annual Night Race in Schladming. High time to discover the ski resorts of Styria and their special charms ...

A paradise for snow fans

World Cup Ski Region – Schladming Dachstein

Between the peaks of the Schladming Tauern and the Dachstein mountain ranges, or more precisely between the villages of Haus im Ennstal, Schladming-Rohrmoos and Pichl, lies one of Austria's "Top 5 Ski Areas": the Schladming 4-Mountain Ski Area. Europe's most modern snow-making facilities ensure plenty of snow until late spring, and gourmet ski huts serve delicious culinary delights. Other popular ski mountains are Riesneralm and Planneralm, Ramsau ski resort, and Galsterberg.

Speaking of snow-sure: The Dachstein with its glacier also offers the possibility of skiing beyond the winter months! What's more, the slopes at an elevation of 2,700 metres offer breathtaking scenic views of the Salzburg – Upper Austria – Styria border triangle.

Winter sports on Kreischberg

If you want to go snowboarding in Styria, Kreischberg is the place to go. In addition to its own snowboard world championship arena, the ski resort also boasts Europe's largest halfpipe. This and several other ski resorts – such as Turracher Höhe, Lachtal or Grebenzen – make the holiday region around the historic small town of Murau one of the top addresses for all boarders and freeriders. 14 cable cars and lifts on Kreischberg take them up to an elevation of 2,050 metres.

Is Kreischberg only for snowboarders? Not at all! Skiers will enjoy the wide carving slopes, the speed course or night skiing on a floodlit run.

Skiing between the Ausseerland region, Hochsteiermark and Eastern Styria

Where do relaxed skiing enjoyment and long-standing traditions meet? Around the snow-covered lakes of the Ausseerland in the Salzkammergut region. That's where winter shows itself from its gentle and easy-going side. Both the diverse slopes and the new funparks at the Loser and Tauplitz ski resorts invite you to spend enjoyable hours on skis or a snowboard. Above the tree line and without long waiting times, winter sports enthusiasts can finetune their skills here.

Directly from the hotel onto the slopes and afterwards to an après-ski bar or some other culinary destination? True to the motto "from your bed onto your board", there are countless four-star hotels and alpine huts located next to the ski resorts' ski runs. Another tip for overnight stays: the new alpine hut villages with four-star comfort.

Family winter bliss and sporty challenges for snow fans: This is what the ski resorts of Stuhleck, Präbichl, Mariazeller Bürgeralpe, Niederalpl, Hohe Veitsch and Aflenzer Bürgeralm around Hochschwab and in the Mürztal valley combine. Seasoned pros get to challenge themselves on downhill runs with a gradient of up to 43 per cent – but even if you prefer your slopes to be not quite as steep, these ski resorts are perfect for you. Many families like to come here for a day trip or holiday.

By the way: Alpine skiing's triumphal success in the entire Alpine region started in Stuhleck more than 120 years ago. Today, four cable cars and chairlifts take skiers and snowboarders up to an altitude of almost 1,800 metres. If you would like to learn more about the history of winter sports, the WinterSportMuseum in Mürzzuschlag is the place to go.

The ski resorts between Salzstiegl and Koralm, located west of Graz, offer leisurely fun on the slopes between Schilcherland and Lipizzanerheimat. For a day trip, a short holiday or a longer stay: Beginners of all ages feel particularly at home here. Après-ski means above all enjoyment – and that's what you'll experience at the rustic wine taverns along the Wine Roads and at the local inns.

The small ski resorts of East Styria are equally as stunning. From the Almenland Nature Park to Joglland and the Wechsel region, a combination of gentle slopes, warm hospitality and beautiful winter scenery impresses holidaymakers. Good to know: With the Oststeiermark WinterCard, you can combine skiing with cross-country skiing at a very reasonable price.
