Schlossberg Funicular

Graz

In 90 seconds from the hustle and bustle of the city to the Schlossberg panorama.

For over 100 years, the Schlossbergbahn (funicular) has connected the old town of Graz with the Schlossberg. The funicular, which opened in 1894, is one of the oldest of its kind and remains one of the city's notable technical attractions to this day.

The railway overcomes up to 60 percent gradient along its route. In just one and a half minutes, it takes you from the foot of the mountain up to the Schlossberg terrace. The glass panoramic cabins provide impressive views of the roofs of the UNESCO-protected old town during the ride.

What do Graz and Niagara Falls have in common? Both feature a funicular as a technical highlight. And even though the dimensions are different, the Graz version offers quite an adrenaline rush – especially on the steeper sections when the incline becomes noticeable and the view seems to extend beyond the edge.

The Schlossbergbahn is now an integral part of the cityscape. It operates daily and makes the ascent to the Schlossberg part of the experience – whether for a stroll through the historical facilities, dining with a view, or simply for a look over the city.
