Gottschee Memorial

Graz

Insights into 650 years of Gottscheer history.

In 1967, the Gottscheer Gedenkstätte (Gottscheer Memorial) was established in Graz-Mariatrost to document the 650-year history of the German linguistic island in present-day Slovenia. In the exhibition area on the first and second basement floors of the church, original costumes, home working tools, a reconstructed Gottscheer farmhouse parlor, historical writings, and visual materials are displayed. This vividly conveys the cultural identity of this closely connected ethnic group.

The memorial connects the sacred space on the ground floor with the museum area in the lower levels. Video interviews with contemporaries complement the exhibits and make the themes of flight, displacement, and new beginnings tangible. The atmosphere is characterized by respect, contemplation, and an awareness of historical homeland.

A visit to the memorial offers insights into history, tradition, and culture and invites visitors to discover, understand, and contemplate a significant chapter in Styrian and Gottscheer history.

Opening Hours: Visits are possible by prior telephone arrangement: +43 664 3533338 (Mag. Renate Fimbinger). Admission is free.
