Time travel to experience Styrian everyday worlds of yesterday
The Volkskundemuseum (Museum of Folk Culture) in Graz is a vibrant piece of history in the heart of the old town. Housed in the historic Capuchin Monastery from the early 17th century, the museum boasts over 40,000 objects, representing the oldest and most extensive ethnological collection in Styria. It ranges from rural everyday life, crafts, and clothing to contemporary customs.
At the center is the permanently expanded permanent exhibition, which opened in 2021. It illuminates Styrian self-images, changes in everyday life, and the diversity of regional identities. A special highlight is the well-preserved smoke room from 1520 from the Packalpe. The Styrian costume hall is also impressive: 42 figurines show the development of regional clothing from the Hallstatt period to the 19th century.
As part of the Styrian Showcase, the museum has been completely redesigned. Under the title "as it is. Worlds Change Perspectives," not only historical topics are addressed, but also current social questions.
Since 2021, the gardens of the museum at the foot of the Schlossberg have opened their gates, offering additional exploration opportunities outdoors. The combination of historic ambiance, vibrant exhibitions, and unique collection treasures makes the Folklore Museum a must-see highlight in the Graz Region.
