Time travel through the history of coins and power cultures in a baroque castle setting.

The Münzkabinett (coin cabinet) in Eggenberg Castle is part of the Universalmuseum Joanneum and houses Austria's second-largest public coin collection with around 70,000 objects. Parts of the collection trace back to Erzherzog Johann (archduke) and provide insight into the development of currency over many centuries.

The exhibition leads from prehistoric Celtic coins through the Roman Flavia-Solva gold coin to medieval coins from Friesach and Graz. The collection is supplemented by medals, securities, and coins from the Danube Monarchy. This creates an overview that makes economic, social, and political connections visible.

Particular attention is paid to the presentation of coins as a reflection of historical developments – from power and dominance to crises and reforms. A special exhibition titled "The Eggenbergers and Money" focuses on the role of the princely house and shows how closely its rise and fall were connected to coin minting in the Holy Roman Empire.

The baroque Eggenberg Castle provides the setting for this collection and connects the world of numismatics with the cultural history of Styria.
