Castle garden

Graz

A quiet retreat in the center of Graz.

An almost undiscovered gem in the heart of Graz is the Burggarten, hidden right behind the seat of the Styrian state government. Who would have thought that a quiet spot with historical depth and botanical diversity lies here? The 1.2-hectare park is one of the oldest in the city and was once an imperial private estate, which was only opened to the public in 1918. It is situated on a well-preserved bastion from the 16th century and today impresses with over 120 rare species of trees and shrubs, including an oriental hazel with a trunk circumference of 1.2 meters, a mighty red beech, and an old oak.

A walk along the well-kept paths particularly allows for the experience of the quiet and harmonious atmosphere. A highlight is the former orangery, which is now stylishly used for events and receptions after its renovation. The greenhouse from 1841 also tells of imperial garden culture and botanical passion.

The Burggarten is open daily from 8 a.m. until half an hour before dusk (in winter only accessible through the Burghof). It is a quiet retreat in the heart of the city, ideal for nature lovers, culture enthusiasts, and anyone who wants to experience Graz from its green, tranquil side.
