Grabneralm with Grabnerstein
From the Buchauer Saddle, we hike via the Grabneralm to the summit of the Grabnerstein. For those seeking alpine variety, the descent via the secured Jungfernsteig to the Admonterhaus offers a rewarding loop.
The Grabnerstein is renowned for its extraordinary floral diversity – especially in May and June, when the summit bursts into bloom. Starting from the Buchauer Saddle (861 m), we hike via the managed Grabneralm, operated by the agricultural school Grabnerhof and known for its local products. After a refreshment stop, we continue on stony paths through dwarf pines to the summit of the easternmost peak of the Haller Mauern. Informational signs along the way make the botanical richness accessible even to non-experts: white alpine daffodils, orchids, and many other alpine flowers accompany us. We enjoy deep views into the valley, sweeping vistas across the Gesäuse National Park, and distant glimpses of the High Tauern. We return via the same route – or take the alpine alternative via the Jungfernsteig to the Admonterhaus.

From the parking area at the Buchauer Saddle (861 m), we head northwest across meadows into the forest. Trail no. 636 repeatedly shortcuts the forest road to the Grabneralm (1,395 m); the final two kilometers follow the road continuously. From the Grabneralm hut, the trail leads gently at first, then more steeply through dwarf pines to the saddle near Zilmkogel (1,588 m). From here, the terrain becomes more alpine: we pass natural watering spots and a ruined shelter before reaching the summit (1,848 m). The descent follows the same path – or we take the secured Jungfernsteig (A/B) to the Jungfernscharte (1,718 m) and continue to the Admonterhaus (1,724 m). Optionally, we can climb the nearby Admonter Warte (1,806 m) before completing the loop via the normal trail back to the Grabneralm and the Buchauer Saddle.
The trail from the Buchauer Saddle to the Grabneralm is a theme trail (theme: "Almen" from the Grabnerhof agricultural school)
