Haindlkarhütte Normalweg

The Haindlkarhütte is a refuge of the Austrian Alpine Club (Austria Section). It is located at the foot of the imposing north walls of the Hochtor group at an altitude of 1,121m. The attractive, approximately one-and-a-half-hour approach leads uphill through varied terrain and delights children as well as adults, while the picturesque, mystical surroundings make you forget all your efforts.
In between, there is the opportunity to refresh yourself with cold mountain spring water or to relax in the shade of a boulder and enjoy the magnificent view of the Buchstein group opposite.

At the hut you can fortify yourself for further tours with regional, lovingly prepared delicacies and enjoy the cosy ambience in or around the refuge.

The innkeeper Gerhard Schlager looks forward to welcoming you!

More information

From the south along the Ennstalstraße and the A9 of the Phyrnautobahn to Admont and from there onto the Gesäusestraße into the NAtionalpark.

From the north via Amstetten or Steyr to Altenmarkt near St. Gallen. Continue via Großreifling and the Hieflau into the Gesäuse then to the car park.

The ascent to the Haindlkarhütte is, as the name suggests, an ascent in a cirque and therefore there is hardly any lack of gravel, which must also be overcome with surefootedness in a few places. However, the ascent is pleasant, steep only in a few short places and leads along the Haindlkargraben towards the imposing rock faces of the Hochtor group . Just before the hut is the old Haindlkarhütte, the first dwelling for climbers in this area.

The approach to the Haindlkarhütte has been used by climbers for generations, as witnessed by the old Haindlkarhütte, which was first built in 1923. The paths are appropriately developed and marked, so that not only climbers but also hikers can easily find their way under the north walls of the Gesäuse. Due to the low steepness and the shortness of the path, even those who are less fit feel ready for this climb, but it should not be underestimated completely, because the cirque is in motion, especially after rainfall, and causes slight changes in the course of the path in the gravelly-stony passages again and again. Loose stones and watercourses are part of the alpine environment for which the Gesäuse is known. The trail to the hut can be taken especially at the beginning of the hiking season, as the hut is located at just over 1,100m.

The views of the walls of Planspitze, Rosskuppe, Dachl, Hochtor and Festkogel are scenically very rewarding. If you turn around on the ascent, you can see the massive shape of the Großer Buchstein.

The Weidendom, Austria's largest construction site, and the "Ecological Footprint" can be reached on foot directly from the car park. A round in the Lettmair-Au with various stations as well as a viewing platform directly on the Enns is also recommended as a cosy conclusion to the Gsengscharten round. For more information see
