Sonnschienalm von Wildalpen

Extensive mountain hike from the northern Hochschwab side to the southern as well as a good connecting tour. Wildalpen Winterhöh - Antonikreuz - Kreuzpfäder - Schafhalssattel - Zumach - Sonnschienalm
Everything is there, starting with beautiful climbs and rustic paths, a small stream as well as a lot of water in the valley and rather little forest road, the rather leisurely ascent path and very extensive, is easy to walk throughout.  The water of Hochschwab not only supplies the people directly in the surrounding areas with water, but also the federal capital Vienna. Over a distance of 183 km, approx. 210,000 m³ of fresh water is transported from Wildalpen to Vienna every day. The Sonnschienalm is located in the Hochschwab area, the area with the most chamois in Europe.

When you arrive in Wildalpen, take the turn-off to Hinterwildalpen and immediately after a few hundred metres turn left up to Winterhöh, the ski lift or sauna and park there.

Trail number 829

This tour is suitable for enduring mountain hikers. The trail begins at the Winterhöh car park on an asphalt road and it is recommended to take the Seesteig trail to Hartlsee after the first sharp right-hand bend. Once at the lake, turn right again to the asphalt road, which is tackled uphill. You reach a large meadow, follow the road for a short distance and immediately afterwards a forest path leads further up to Antonikreuz and even higher up to Kreuzpfäder. From Kreuzpfäder it gets really exciting, because you hike below the Hochschwabrießen Gr. Grießstein, Gr. Ebenstein and Schaufelwand in a unique area until you reach Schafhalssattel. From the Schafhalssattel, the route is more leisurely across an alpine meadow, then uphill to Zumach and from there across the idyllic alpine plateau to the Sonnschienalm.

A very good connection to the Hochschwab tours!

Walking time: approx. 6 hours in the ascent

Trail length: approx. 13 km

Due to the length of the trail, it is essential to plan this tour as a 2-day tour; you can spend the night in the Sonnschienalm Alpine Club House.

Between Kreuzpfäder and Schafhalssattel you can clearly see an important event in Wildalpen, namely a landslide about 5900 years ago. Rapid warming led to the melting of the glaciers within a few thousand years. The ice tumbled down the slopes during the cold period, and after the melting the mountain flanks are now without support and therefore often become unstable. Landslides and rockfalls were the result. In the area of Brandstein, Schaufelwand, Ebenstein, Gr. Grießstein, a rim of demolition formed. Visible sliding surfaces and an area with sliding clods can be seen below, as well as traces of a torrent and its deposits long ago down the valley.
