Apple hiking trail from Puch to Weiz

Closed
"A journey to paradise", a gently rolling, beautiful landscape with orchards as far as the eye can see awaits us on this hike.
The apple village has a special climate. The warm days and cool nights are perfect for fruit growing. Only here do the apples get their intense aroma. That is why there are more apple trees around Puch than anywhere else; three out of four Styrian apples come from here. The fruit growers refine many of them into juices, cider and schnapps. The innkeepers on the Apple Road conjure up specialties from the fruit. For example, all vintages of the "Abakus" are bricked into the church wall; this noble brandy is only opened after 100 years.

In Elz stands as an archway the largest apple in the world, in Harl the "cathedral of the apple", the large fruit warehouse. In the "House of the Apple" the history of fruit growing is presented, and here you can taste the fruit in liquid form and as a juicy pastry. The gravestone of Ignaz Weberhofer, Peter Rosegger's forest schoolmaster, is right next door. When the great poet visited him, it was for him "A journey to paradise".

The apple village of Puch lies at the center of the Styrian Apple Route in Austria's largest fruit-growing region.

We start in the apple village of Puch and walk along the "apple hiking trail" marked with the number 10 in the direction of the balloon launch site. After the bridge, we turn right where the path leads us uphill via Steingrub through many orchards. Now we turn right onto the road until the bend. After approx. 100 m, we turn left along the edge of the forest and reach the Alterilzweg junction in the middle of the forest. We follow this into the village of Alterilz and on to Peesen.

At the Hafner inn, after the parking lot, we turn right over the Nöstelberg to the Calvary Chapel and on to Thannhausen, now a final climb up the Weizberg.

Follow the Way of the Cross towards the town center to Weiz's main square.

This hike is particularly attractive during the flowering season in spring, but is also a special treat for all the senses in the fall during harvest time.

This hike is particularly charming in the flowering and harvest season. Work is being done on the continuous trail marking.
