Gallenstein Castle Ruins

St. Gallen

In the northern part of the Gesäuse lies one of the region's must-see sights. We are talking about a castle that has been there for many, many years. But don't let that trick you into thinking it is a quiet, sedate place - especially not in summer, when musicians and artists from all over the world come to visit.

Let’s go on a trip through time: by the 13th century St. Gallen was already home to a castle high up on the towering rocks. The Benedictine monks of Admont fled to this castle when the abbey was no longer a secure place for them to reside in times of war. Nowadays, the castle is a popular destination for excursions. It is also the location of the prestigious festival held there once a year, which attracts culture enthusiasts from near and far.

A festival in the Gesäuse

Sound has never been more atmospheric! Right in the heart of the Steirische Eisenwurzen Nature Park, music and culture enthusiasts get together for two weeks in August and enjoy piano recitals, world music, readings and much more. The programme is put together by the recommendations of the artists themselves and still manages to surprise year after year.

Always by your side

Weather permitting, the castle is open to the public all year round. The view of the Gesäuse Mountains makes many visitors return, because no two days are ever the same here: the atmosphere changes, the seasons change and with them our perspective on what is going on in the world shifts as well. Gallenstein Castel is waiting - come and see for yourself.
