Laurentiuskirche

Vordernberg

The former parish church - first dedicated to St. Elisabeth and later to St. Laurentius - which was repeatedly ravaged by fires over the centuries, was for a long time the destination of pilgrims from all over the surrounding area who hoped for help in emergencies and illnesses at the miraculous cross. It has survived much in the past and today is once again a quiet place of contemplation.

The increasing demand for iron required the smelting furnaces to be moved down the valley and the Laurentikirche was replaced by the parish church "Maria Himmelfahrt" (Assumption of Mary) in 1830 and is therefore now only a branch church. The fortified church was built in 1388.

The late Gothic church, built in 1388, was renovated in 2004 and is located about one kilometer above the village in the direction of Präbichl. It was originally the parish church of Vordernberg.
Since the village and its wheel works moved down the valley over time, because there was more water available for the blast furnaces, it is now only a daughter church.
On May 7, 1882, the church and a neighboring house burned down. During reconstruction, the church tower was given a pointed roof instead of the previous onion dome.
Already on August 11, 1883 four new bells were raised and consecrated.

Large parts of the ring wall and a cupola tower are still preserved from the small fortified church. The complex once had a strong gate tower and a much higher ring wall with a battlement and two rows of embrasures.
