Altaussee lake circuit

One of the most beautiful circular hiking trails in the Salzkammergut awaits you here in Altaussee.
Magnificent views of the Trisselwand, the Loser and the glaciers of the Dachstein massif make the walk around the lake an unforgettable experience.

Lake Altaussee is certainly one of the most romantic places in Austria. The view of the Dachstein glacier in the second part of the trail is not only a particularly popular photo motif, but will also certainly remain in your memory forever and ever - with or without a camera. Incidentally, Lake Altaussee is three kilometers long, up to one kilometer wide and surrounded by foothills of the Tote Gebirge mountains to the north and east, and is drained by the Altausseer Traun, one of the three headwaters of the Traun River.

Due to the many benches located on the lakeshore, the path is ideal for families and also older people. In midsummer, Lake Altaussee is also warm enough to cool off a bit while swimming, as numerous small beaches along the way invite you to take a break.

More information

The best way to get to Altaussee is to plan with google.at/maps
Starting from the spa gardens in Altaussee, walk in a southeasterly direction to the Hotel Seevilla. On the southern shore of Lake Altaussee, you now walk through a shady forest to the fork in paths 1a and 233. Following the path marked 1a, you reach the beach café. The flat path now leads along the lakeshore with beautiful views of the lake and the Loser, before it turns north at the foot of the imposing Trisselwand to the Seewiese.

The Seewiese is not only home to two beautiful restaurants with enchanting terraces, where a few Ausseer musicians often play, but also offers one of the most beautiful views of the Dachstein glacier. From the Seewiese, the path now leads back towards Altaussee at the foot of the Loser. Via the lakeside promenade, you pass the Seewirt restaurant and the church and return to the starting point in the Altaussee spa gardens.
