Kuruzzen hiking trail Burgau
A historically interesting circular hike in the border area with two highlights, the Burgauberg lookout and faithfully reconstructed Tschartake near the Lafnitz.
A circular hike in the border region between the provinces of Styria and Burgenland, which will not only delight hikers interested in history. In the centre of Burgau, the numerous hiking and recreational trails are indicated by a very original brochure stand. Before or after the hike, you should take some time to visit the moated castle, first mentioned in a document in 1367, which is owned by the municipality and is Burgau's landmark. Along the way, you will find numerous information boards depicting the development of the region over the last few centuries. You will also learn about terms such as Hoadnsterz, Türkentommerl, Tschartake, Kuruzzen, Kruzitürken and the "pepper - paprika line". In addition to the history, this circular hike also impresses with its views, something you wouldn't expect in the "lowlands". The Burgauberg lookout point is an ideal resting and viewing point with a fantastic panoramic view, with panorama boards to help you find your way around. Another highlight is the opportunity to climb into a faithfully recreated Tschartake (border guard tower) right next to the Lafnitz.

Detailed information on how to get to us can be found here.
We start from the main square of Burgau and in the middle of the square we find two artistic objects, a wheel and a walker, where we find info sheets about the walks. We pass the parking lot and continue around the castle pond. We orientate ourselves by the church tower, go up the parish stairs to the pilgrimage church. A few more steps uphill and we are directly at the church, where we turn right to the Pfarrweg. At the next crossing we keep to the right and follow the elevated road slightly downhill. At the big crossroads we go straight on and after a few meters we turn left into the hiking trail. An idyllic stretch of path follows, over bridges and past a pond. Continuing on a sidewalk parallel to the road, we cross the Lafnitz River and from now on we are in Burgenland. Passing the Bleier Inn, we change the side of the road, follow the sidewalk and then keep slightly to the right uphill through the populated area until we reach the hill and see the lookout station in front of us. The detour to the Burgauberg lookout is worthwhile, as we find a comfortable place to rest and informative panoramic panels in all directions. Continue along the Höhenstraße past the municipal office and the elementary school, straight on at the next intersection until you see the bicycle junction 65 on the left after about 1.3 km. Here we go right across the meadow slightly downhill, cross an access road and follow the bike path across the meadow in the direction of bike junction 66. Arrived in the valley at the road, we now go left to the sports field, where directly a meadow path leads to the Lafnitz and Tschartake. Now we keep to the right, walk a short distance along the Lafnitz, branch off to the left and continue hiking between the farmland. At a gravel road junction we turn right and immediately left again. Arrived at the priority road, we keep left and follow the course of the road until we reach our starting point again, the main square of Burgau.
Take your time and enjoy the panorama from the viewing platform.
