More information

Coming from Graz:

A9 Phyrnautobahn north, then S35 Brucker Schnellstraße and S6 Semmering Schnellstraße to Kapfenberg exit, then on the B20 (Mariazeller Bundesstraße) 49 km north (signpost). From Mariazell again about 4 km to Mitterbach.Alternative: S6 Semmeringschnellstraße to exit St. Marein and then over the Pogusch to Turnau and from Au on the B20 to Mariazell and further to Mitterbach.

Coming from Salzburg:Westautobahn A1 to exit Ybbs, then B25 to Scheibbs, from there two options:Either B28 via Wastl am Wald to B20, then via Annaberg and Josefsberg to Mitterbach.or B25 further to Grubberg and then B71 via the newly expanded Zellerrain.

Coming from Vienna: Take the A1 Westautobahn to the St. Pölten Süd exit, then take the B20 (Mariazeller Bundesstraße) 76 km south, either via Annaberg and Josefsberg or in Freiland turn left from the B20 onto the B21 and continue via Hohenberg and St. Aegyd through the Halltal valley to Mariazell (sufficiently signposted) and on to Mitterbach.Variant: Südautobahn A2 and S6 Semmering expressway to Mürzzuschlag, then via Neuberg and Mürzsteg on the B21 to Mariazell and continue to Mitterbach.

We start our hike at the village square in Mitterbach and walk a short distance along the B20 in the direction of Mariazell to the turnoff in the direction of Erlaufsee. Partly along the Erlauf we come to the Erlaufsee, here turn right and cross the bridge, then immediately left on the Lower Austrian side - past the 1st Sagentafel to the Lindenhof. Here we keep to the right (the marker is on the retaining wall) and hike to the Erlaufursprung (2nd legend board).

Following the hiking trail we reach the marble quarry (3rd legend board) and continue over the Iron Lord to the Halterhütte on the Brach. From there you can already see our destination - the summit of the Gemeindealpe at 1626 m, which we reach after about 50 min.

From the top station, either cross the alpine pastures directly to the middle station or take the bypass road past the middle station and along hiking trail 622 back to Mitterbach.

Alternative: descent with the chairlift - saving approx. 2 hours walking time or on foot to the middle station and then whizz down to the valley with the mountain carts!

The Erlaufursprung is worth seeing especially in spring when the snow melts.
