Stainzer Warte round trip

Around the Stainzerwarte The circular trail circles around the famous Stainzerwarte. Not only from the viewing platform you can enjoy fantastic views over the hilly Schilcherland around Stainz.
This hiking trail impresses with its impressive viewpoints. You can let your gaze wander over Styrian natural beauties such as the Koralm, the Gleinalm, the Grazer Bergland, the unique Sausal, the surrounding wine-growing area and of course over the idyllic village of Stainz.

In addition, the Stainzerwarte, a wooden observation tower, awaits you as an absolute highlight. The view from the top remains unforgettable and is the absolute highlight of the hiking tour. Up here you can leave everyday life behind you.

This route also offers some delicacies for hikers interested in history. You will pass a fallen cult stone as well as boards with valuable information about excavations on the Lethkogel. The tour ends with a relaxed stroll through the centre of the Schilchermarkt Stainz.

More information

Plan your journey via Google Maps to the starting point of the tour: www.google.at/maps

From the north: Motorway Munich - Salzburg - Eben - Schladming - Liezen onto the A9 towards Graz. Exit at Lieboch and follow the B76 towards Deutschlandsberg until you reach the Stainz exit. A9 is subject to toll - Gleinalmtunnel. Alternative: at St. Michael take the S6 towards Bruck and in Bruck take the S35 towards Graz.

From the west: In Villach take the A2 towards Klagenfurt. Take the Steinberg exit and drive in the direction of St. Stefan/Stainz, from here continue on the main road to Stainz.

From the east: A2: Vienna - Aspang - Hartberg - Fürstenfeld - Graz. From Graz continue on the A2 in the direction of Klagenfurt and take the Lieboch exit in the direction of Stainz/Deutschlandsberg/Eibiswald. Follow the B76 to Stainz.

From the south: A1 from Marburg to Leibnitz. Exit in Leibnitz (Gralla) and continue on the B74 towards Deutschlandsberg. At the roundabout in Preding take the second exit towards Stainz. From here follow the signs to the centre of Stainz.

Awaiting you is a seven-kilometre route that you can hike in about two and a half hours, a tour that nature lovers will particularly appreciate. A very special circular trail starts here in front of the town hall in the centre of Stainz, where Archduke Johann once resided. The area around Stainz is characterised by viticulture. Especially the Schilcher, a special rosé wine, thrives here. Don't forget to taste this special wine.

The path first takes you past the old weighbridge of Stainz. Believe it or not, there is a giraffe in the weighbridge. In summer 2009, a work by the artist Helmut Dick, who lives in the Netherlands, was realised here in a former weighbridge. The artist developed it after intensive work with a group of young people from Stainz who frequented the then youth centre jung.kultur.haus FRIDA. Here you will probably have to take your mobile phone or camera to prove your stories later.

You continue along the Engelweingarten, which shines in the most beautiful colours, especially in autumn. Then you hike uphill through a long forest and reach Max Gschiel Straße. In front of you is the Pletterikapelle chapel with a resting bench, where you are rewarded with a first beautiful view of Stainz.

On hot days, the forest offers the opportunity to cool off in the shade and you can listen to the chirping of the birds. The path with the marking 1 that you follow leads you up to the Engelweingärten. These are not very visible from the road. Therefore, make a detour so as not to miss these idyllic vineyards. Take off your walking shoes and lie down on the grass amidst the vines. The old vines give you energy and let you relax wonderfully.

Now the highlight of the tour awaits you. You hike up to the legendary Stainzer Warte, which was built in 1902. You have now been walking for an hour and have covered 270 metres in altitude. Now more metres in altitude follow. There are 93 steps leading up to the viewing platform at a height of 26 metres. You should be free from giddiness to enjoy the breathtaking view over the vineyards around Stainz. Tables and benches await you in front of the lookout, ideal for enjoying a snack or a glass of Schilcher. Interesting information about the excavations on the adjacent Lethkogel to the north awaits you at the information boards.

Once you have had your fill and taken enough photos, the path leads you downhill to the car park.

From here, take trail 12, the so-called Jägersteig, and hike down steep paths through a wonderfully natural forest. Around the Neurathbach stream you will find a system lovingly built by hard-working helpers from the region consisting of bridges, steps with handrails and a rest bench. Take the opportunity to relax a little and enjoy nature.

Full of new energy, continue downhill to Neurath to the plague column and parallel to trail 1 back to Schilchermarkt Stainz. Here you have the opportunity to do a little shopping. Take a few delicacies from the region home with you or enjoy a Styrian fried chicken with a salad and core oil in one of the inns.

Stainzerwarte: The unique lookout tower is made entirely of wood. At a height of 17 metres you can enjoy a magnificent view over the beautiful Schilcherland.
