Kitzeck im Sausal

Slate steep slopes - committed to the origin 100% estate bottling, 100% manual labor, 100% steep slopes Since 1803, the Wohlmuth family has been pressing their wines in the southern Styrian Kitzeck im Sausal, the highest wine-growing village in Austria and, with its numerous international as well as national awards, has been one of the best wineries in Austria for decades. The most elaborate manual work from pruning to the entire foliage work to the selective hand harvest is the basis of quality, as well as the handling of natural resources is characterized by respect, which makes a renunciation of herbicides and insecticides self-evident. Irrigation does not exist here and the steepest single vineyards are still mowed with a scythe. The vineyards are located at an altitude of 400 to 600 meters above sea level and, with a slope of up to 90%, are among the steepest vineyards in Europe. Up to 1,200 hours of labor go into each hectare of vineyards in these extreme locations each year until the finished wine is in the barrels. The concise slate minerality can be found in all of the winery's wines and shows how firmly rooted the vine is with the predominant soil in the Kitzeck-Sausal local appellation.

For generations, some of the earliest mentioned single vineyards in Austria have been owned by the Wohlmuth family, such as the Ried Edelschuh, which was already mentioned in a document in 1322. With great effort, these historically most significant single vineyards are maintained and preserved, and sometimes laboriously recultivated. These vineyards are ultimately the basis of a unique quality. They give rise to wines of origin that are characterized by the interplay of warmth (Illyrian climate, ripe grapes) and coolness (Alpine influence, poor slate soil and altitude). These extremely storable and complex wines, served in some of the best restaurants in Europe.
