A special insight into the rock world of the surrounding area!
Since August 2014, you can visit the rock world at the former municipal office Wielfresen and get interesting insights into the existing rock types of the area. The twenty, up to several tons heavy rock blocks and slabs were cut for the most part and the surfaces polished, so that the rocks can show their "inner life" better. The rocks were arranged into groups according to their occurrence, with the different eclogite blocks clearly being the highlight of the exhibition. This rock, formed under high pressure and temperature conditions about 90 million years ago, first became known worldwide in 1822 from the Kor and Saualpe mountains by the French mineralogist René-Just Haüy. For more than 200 years, earth scientists from all over the world have made pilgrimages here to study the impressive rock world of the Koralmkristallins. The exhibited rocks may inspire visitors to the site not only to pay a visit to the Geosteig Hohl-Felsen, which is well worth seeing, or to the Glashütten Geopark, but also to get to know the wide range of rocks from plate gneiss to pegmatite in the entire Koralm region, for example along the 70 km long Koralm Kristall Trail. The exhibition is open all year round, the small special exhibition with rocks and minerals from the municipal area and jewelry made from them, as well as guided tours are available by appointment.Marktgemeindeamt Wies: +43 05 03465 100, gde@wies.at, Technical inquiries to: walter.postl@gmx.at, Further literature: Walter Postl - Geopark Glashütten - Ein Führer durch die Gesteinswelt der Koralpe, available at 03467-7400
