On the trail of Peter Rosegger - from country house to birthplace

The hike to Peter Rosegger's birthplace from Krieglach leads us through beautiful forests past the Gölk Chapel, a special place in the Waldheimat. Don't be surprised if pilgrims and pilgrims meet us on their way to Mariazell: the tour runs along a section of the famous Mariazell Trail 06 - in this case on the variant that leads via Krieglach to the Marian pilgrimage site.

In addition to the hike from one residence to another, which particularly characterised Peter Rosegger - from the country house to his birthplace - the Gölk Chapel is certainly a special place on our tour. The patron of the Gölkkapelle, who had it renovated and extended, was a baron who owned a hammer mill in Krieglach. The Gölkkapelle was so important to him because he had his beloved wife, who had died very young, buried there. This meant he could keep in touch with her every day - even after her death. You can see right from the manor house to the chapel and vice versa. The Taj Mahal in India served as a model for this.

More information

Take the S6 Semmering motorway (Krieglach exit) towards the main square and the Rosegger Park is right next door.

From the main square, take the Friedhofweg, where you will soon come to the Gölkweg. First take the subway of the motorway to reach the Gölkkapelle chapel.

Now head towards Hochgölk, the highest point of our hike at 1,176 metres. The next destination is the Alpl main road, which you leave again after a short time, branching off towards rehts. Following the path slightly downhill, you reach the Peter Rosegger Forest School, which is also home to the Austrian Hiking Museum.

After visiting the forest school, follow the path slightly uphill to Peter Rosegger's birthplace. Peter Rosegger spent his first 17 years here at the ‘Vorderer Kluppeneggerhof’ until it became clear that he would not become a farmer. His stature was too delicate, his mind too subtle. His talent was already recognised during his apprenticeship as a tailor and numerous patrons made it possible for little Peter to become one of Austria's greatest poets: His life's work comprised 43 books as well as the monthly magazine ‘Heimgarten’, which continued to appear until 1953, long after his death. With 15 million books and translations into more than 20 languages, Peter Rosegger was the most widely read writer of his time alongside Jules Verne.
